“What’s with the music box?” he asks.
“Which part? The fact that it’s a box? Or that it makes music?”
“Both,” he says, “Music seems like a waste of time to you, Nourisher. Or is it a relic from the Order? Classified?”
“The Order of Black doesn’t retain relics aside from our Progenitor, Katabasis. A common misunderstanding.” Your fingers instinctively touch the worn surface where it dangles from your belt. “Think of it as an alarm, when things you don’t want to see are too close. Or when I decide it should sing.”
His smile curves slowly, eyes lingering on the trinket. “I guess it has a lovely tune.”
“You don’t want to hear it,” you answer, stepping past, boots crushing shards beneath them. “Not unless it’s time for you to start running.”
